Welcome to the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). The University of Maryland School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. As an accredited provider, UMSOM is authorized by the American Medical Association (AMA) to award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to physicians for its CME activities that meet the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA) standards. The Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development is responsible for ensuring the quality and scientific integrity of all UMSOM-sponsored CME activities and for maintaining compliance with ACCME and AMA requirements, as well as with applicable UMSOM policies and procedures. 

Purpose

The mission of the University of Maryland School of Medicine CME Program is to develop, implement, and evaluate high quality, innovative medical education activities for postgraduate physicians which promote lifelong learning and support efforts to maintain and enhance competence in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communications skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.  The CME Program is responsible for ensuring that these activities meet the requirements of the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education and other applicable regulatory guidelines.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine is an academic institution that promotes lifelong learning across the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), and the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).  It benefits from an institutional commitment to research and close associations with UMMC/UMMS, the University of Maryland College Park campus, and the other professional schools on the University of Maryland Baltimore campus, including Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Social Work, and the Graduate School. The CME Program and its activities are constantly evaluated to assure alignment with its mission and continuous improvement of its operations, policies, and procedures.

Target Audience

The CME Program of the University of Maryland School of Medicine serves practicing physicians, medical educators, and clinical researchers in generalist and subspecialty disciplines from the School of Medicine, the Baltimore area, the State of Maryland, the Mid-Atlantic region, the nation, and around the world.  In cooperation with other professional schools on the UMB campus, the School of Medicine has jointly provided interprofessional activities that serve the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, lawyers, social workers, and the clergy.

Content Areas

The content areas of the CME Program reflect the activity and expertise of the faculty of the School of Medicine and the educational needs of targeted learners. Content is designed to keep pace with advances in medicine, technology, and biomedical research, and is based on best available evidence, as well as changes in the healthcare environment. The University of Maryland School of Medicine is committed to offering CME that is scientifically based, accurate, current, objectively presented, and free from commercial bias.

Type of Activities Provided

University of Maryland School of Medicine CME activities employ a variety of didactic and interactive educational methods and instructional formats according to the expertise of the faculty, the learning objectives, and the preferences of targeted learners. These include, but are not limited to: live courses (conferences, seminars, workshops); regularly scheduled series (grand rounds, mortality/morbidity conferences, tumor boards); Internet-based enduring materials; and Internet live courses.  As resources permit, the CME Program will also employ other CME formats based on the educational goals and content to be addressed.

Expected Results of the Program

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) expects the following results from its CME Program:

UMSOM CME activities will increase the competence of physicians and others learners through improved awareness and enhanced knowledge of the most current methods of diagnosis, therapy, and disease prevention.

UMSOM CME activities will enhance the competence of its learners through an increase in perceived self-efficacy and the provision of strategies that learners will implement in their practices.

UMSOM will present activities that reflect rigorous standards of analysis of professional practice gaps, educational needs, and appropriate educational design.

UMSOM will present CME content that is balanced, objective, and free from commercial bias.

UMSOM will analyze activity evaluation data, share that analysis with its educational planners, and use that information to improve its CME activities.

UMSOM will operate an efficient, effective, and compliant CME Program.
