Overview

Don Tilghman was born on the Eastern shore of Maryland in 1935. He graduated from The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1961 and trained at Johns Hopkins in OMFS.  He then took a further 1 year training at U Penn in didactics and research, and following this went to U Michigan for 1 year to train in cleft surgery under Dr. Jim Heyward.   When he developed an interest in the new specialty of orthognathic surgery, he became the first faculty at the University of Maryland to undergo cross training and was awarded his certificate of orthodontics from the University of Maryland Orthodontics Department in 1975.  His friendship with R. Adams Cowley (they were both U Michigan trainees) allowed OMFS to be the first specialty service in the newly developed Shock Trauma Center.  In 1991, Dr. Tilghman formed the Cleft Lip/Craniofacial Deformity Program as Co-Director with Dr. Walker Robinson pediatric neurosurgery.  Dr. Tilghman left the University of Maryland in 2000-2001, to go into private OMFS practice back on his beloved Eastern Shore.

Please join us for a day of celebration of Dr. Tilghman’s career, a pioneer and innovator in our specialty.
